Let us be clear, everything we perceive, whether they are sounds, smells, tastes, texture, shapes, and movements, all of them are learning experiences. These come in an unpremeditated way. Imagine all that children can learn if we find a way to stimulate and activate their senses appropriately and safely.

The objective of carrying out sensory activities with children, especially at an early age, is that these experiences occur in a positive and safe environment.

Children can develop the necessary skills to interact with their environment and enhance their intelligence. When children’s senses are activated, they receive huge physical, emotional, and cognitive benefits.

Children have the mental capacity to absorb learning at an early age, which occurs naturally and spontaneously. When the child explores and focuses on something specific in his/her environment that will be useful and necessary for his/her development, the child is going through a stage of growth that María Montessori called sensitive periods.

In those sensitive periods, children are completely attracted to the experiences and feelings of their environment. We must give children the proper setting to experiment with different materials to enrich their learning during these times. These experiences allow them to understand and adapt to the world around them.

This sensory activity can be developed with younger children. Without the need to change the materials because it is a sensory activity, it is vital to make sure that it is safe and organized to eliminate any risks for the child. In this way, appropriate development activities will be carried out according to the children’s skills.

CHANGES FOR CHILDREN OLDER THAN 2

This sensory activity can be done with older children. To increase the difficulty level, you can make different images related to winter clothing with different textures so that children with closed eyes identify the textures. In this way, a preschool activity is carried out according to the children’s abilities and development.
