From the moment they are born, children are learning and adapting to the world around them. This learning process occurs with greater force up to the age of 6, a stage in which children develop most of the skills needed daily.

In this learning and adaptation process, the adult’s role is vital because the adult is an example to follow. But the adult’s role does not stop there. They also provide the spaces with the necessary stimuli for the acquisition of new skills.

From 0 to 6 years of age is when 80% of human brain development takes place. That means that children are naturally predisposed to learn. María Montessori names it the absorbing brain of children.

For this reason, we must try to be a good role model for children, managing our behavior and vocabulary, avoiding coarseness, and motivating them to use the right words. It is imperative to bear in mind that, at this stage, children see, observe, and finally, copy.

Children want to imitate absolutely everything they see, such as lifting objects, collaborating in the kitchen, dressing themselves, among other things. Likewise, they manage to understand their environment and develop their skills.

In this process, spaces and activities must be fostered for the acquisition of new knowledge. For this reason, María Montessori proposed practical life activities in which children strengthen their learning processes through physical movement.

Hands-on life activities allow children to improve their hand and finger movements, which we know as fine motor skills. In the same way, it favors and stimulates the capacity for socialization and empathy with others. That is, social beings are being formed.

HOW DO WE DO THIS FINE MOTOR SKILLS PRESCHOOL ACTIVITY WITH CHILDREN OF DIFFERENT AGES?

CHANGES FOR CHILDREN UNDER 4 YEARS OLD

This fine motor skills preschool activity can be done with younger children. To develop this activity with them, you must lower the difficulty level. In this case, if the children find it challenging to sweep the beans into the square, they can transfer the beans from the container to the square using only their fingers.

In this case, it is essential to make sure that the children place their fingers in a pincer position, using the index finger and thumb. In this way, they will achieve strength and precision in their grip needed later for writing.

CHANGES FOR CHILDREN OLDER THAN 6

This fine motor skills preschool activity can be done with older children. To increase the difficulty level, you will not need to change the materials.

To develop this preschool activity, taking into account children’s development and abilities, you can make several medium-size squares on the tray. Please, remember that the smaller the objects, the more skill in movement children will develop. Children will have to arrange the beans in each of the boxes. This will increase their use of precision by keeping the beans in the squares.
