Fine motor skills are involved in strengthening hands, arms, and even feet muscles, depending on the child’s activity. The improvement of fine motor skills also contributes to balance, cognitive ability to prevent different pathologies, and learning to control their own body.

Even in the future, it enables them to carry out sports activities that require significant effort. Through the exercises completed, when they are younger, children develop a higher proficiency level. These include precision, coordination, efficiency, and harmony, allowing children to perform tasks such as ripping, cutting, painting, coloring, threading, and writing.

Parents must allow their children to carry out activities that involve developing fine motor skills from home. These bring multiple benefits, which is highly relevant throughout their growth.

We propose didactic strategies to provide children with tasks that involve developing motor skills, manipulating different objects, and developing manual skills from home.

Like everything we want to achieve, the practice of different tasks is essential to internalize the learning that leads to children’s intellectual development. It will allow them to face any situation that arises with minimal or even zero levels of frustration.

It is vital to give children the opportunity, almost every day, to find this type of challenge, encouraging them to explore, allowing them to touch, test, and manipulate without limits (as far as possible), so they can get to know the world around them. This ultimately helps children have higher self-esteem through accomplishment and feel more secure, which is very beneficial.

HOW DO WE DO THIS KIDS FINE MOTOR SKILLS ACTIVITY WITH CHILDREN OF OTHER AGES?

CHANGES FOR CHILDREN UNDER 4 YEARS OLD

This kids activity can be done with younger children. Children are developing their pincer grip and eye-manual coordination at this age.

Picking up the lentils with the tweezers can be an activity that requires much more skill than they already have. They may use larger objects to complete the seal’s silhouette, or they could even tear the paper, so they improve this skill. In this way, a preschool activity appropriate to their development and abilities would be carried out.

CHANGES FOR CHILDREN OLDER THAN 6

This kids fine motor skills activity can be done with older children. It is unnecessary to change the materials. At this age, children can even use other materials or grains to complete the entire silhouette. You could also make a landscape around the seal in which the grains could be painted after being glued. In this process, you can talk to the child about the ecosystem in which seals live and its importance.
