Nowadays, with a more industrialized society and economic advances that depend on natural resources, and a philosophy where the throwaway economy is above all else, it is necessary to stop along the way and raise awareness about caring for the environment. Therefore, the task is to teach children who they are in the future, to develop sustainable practices that are generous with the environment.
Education starts at home. It is necessary to teach our children about nature and the environment before they start going to school. We must teach them respect and love and explain to them that natural resources are limited and that we must care about them.
An excellent way to encourage children to take care of the environment is through activities that allow them to interact directly with it in an active way. For example, teaching them to recycle in a fun way, explaining the importance of saving water by turning off the tap every time it is used, saving energy by turning off the lights when they leave a room, keeping the environment clean, not to throw away their papers or garbage on the floor.
When we are outside, we must keep our disposable items in our pockets and throw them away when finding a trash container. Take care of plants, not step on them. Care for and respect animals, and feed them.
Another great practice is to trek where children can interact with nature and learn how to care about it. They can pick up trash from there, understand how essential nature is, and contribute to saving it. We must create empathy in children about nature to put themselves in other’s shoes—a good action affects other’s lives.
