Self-love is a dam and barrier against suffering. When individuals recognize their virtues and strengths and integrate them into daily life effectively and compassionately, they soon develop self-love.
According to Walter Riso, when you love yourself despising and ignoring others, it is exclusion. When you love others and loathe yourself, it is a lack of self-love.
It is essential to work on building self-esteem from within the home. Let children know how much they are loved to reflect that love in themselves and towards others.
Strengthening self-esteem allows the increase of positive emotions, reduces anxiety and sadness, improves well-being, and enables better interaction with others without requiring someone else’s approval. This also enhances love for a couple and friends and helps autonomous and independent people make crucial decisions for life.
Loving yourself is learning to accept yourself and recognize your defects to modify them. We must instill self-love from home. That helps to form happier children and prevent future psychological problems such as depression, phobias, stress, anxiety, insecurity, psychosomatic disorders, problems with interpersonal relationships, as a couple, poor performance, body image problems, or inability to regulate emotions.
According to a study carried out by cognitive psychology, all of the above shows that the previously mentioned problems can occur over time due to a lack of self-love or self-esteem.
One way to help children learn to gain skills and strengthen self-esteem is by motivating them through the following concepts and apply them in daily life:
- Self-concept: What they think about themselves. Teach them to believe in what they do without fear of making mistakes.
- Self-image: How much they like themselves. It is when they learn to accept, love, and respect.
- Self-reinforce: When they reward and indulge themselves. Children must reward themselves when they achieve a goal; it helps to strengthen self-esteem, self-efficacy.
- Self-confidence: believing in abilities regardless of mistakes, moving forward, and being perseverant.

ACTIVITY DEVELOPMENT
Before carrying out the kids art projects activity, you should give a small explanation to children of the abilities and characteristics of each sea animal to let them think of which ones might have similar qualities to them, i.e., “a sea horse is fast and so am I.”
Step 1:
Children will use the dry-erase markers and draw a picture of themselves or something they connect with, like their favorite stuffed animal.
Step 2:
Remove a sea animal from the container and pick a few you think have qualities/abilities like you
Step 3:
Place the animals in the figure that was drawn on the board. Children can put the animal on the part of the body related to qualities/abilities they have in common, i.e., using the previous example of the sea horse being fast, the child can glue the sea horse to the figure’s legs.

CHANGES FOR CHILDREN UNDER 4 YEARS OLD
You can do this kids art projects activity with younger children. To decrease the difficulty level, you can give them a colored sheet of cardboard/cardstock to make a collage. In this way, children will carry out a kids activity suitable for their development and abilities.
CHANGES FOR CHILDREN OVER 6 YEARS OLD
You can do this kids art projects activity with older children. However, to increase the difficulty level, you can give them the same materials. They should write around the drawing those qualities and strengths that differentiate them. In this way, children will carry out a preschool activity appropriate to their development and abilities.
