Montessori considered the hand as the best learning tool. Children explore the world around them with their hands; thus, each of the materials has an objective and a reason for being. No children’s interaction with their environment is in vain. This is why we must ensure that they have everything that can help their development and interest them.
Children learn through their own experiences. At this age, their thinking works in a real way, and getting abstract concepts is not easy. To achieve this, children must go through the concrete, and it is at this point where materials play a critical role. Materials allow children to manipulate, explore, inquire, know, feel, listen, observe, move, imagine, among many other things.
According to the above, it is essential to bear in mind that the didactic material has an objective in children’s learning processes. This does not mean you must provide materials that solely serve to entertain children; these materials must be appropriate and meet their learning needs. The following kids crafts activity is based on the Montessori learning method. Children will have the possibility to manipulate, cut, and strengthen their knowledge about groundhogs by doing a craft.
THEME: GROUNDHOG KIDS CRAFTS
HOW DO WE DO THIS ACTIVITY?
Topic: Handcraft
Age: 4-6-year-old children
Goal: Through this kids craft activity, children will strengthen their creativity and precision in hand and finger movements.
Difficulty level: Advanced. This kids craft activity is designed for children to carry out autonomously and independently by following instructions.

MATERIALS
- Brown foamy
- Black foamy
- White foamy
- Glue
- A marker
- Scissors
- Pincel
ACTIVITY DEVELOPMENT
(Adult supervision)
Step 1:
On the brown foamy, draw and cut out the body of the groundhog.
Step 2:
At the bottom of the groundhog, draw two circles and cut them out.
Step 3:
Draw two small circles from the brown foamy cut them out, and paste them on the groundhog’s head to create the ears.
Step 4:
Draw two medium circles on the white foamy and two small circles on the black foamy, cut out and paste them to form the eyes.
Step 5:
On the black foamy, draw the groundhog’s nose, cut out, and glue it where the nose should be.
Step 6:
Finally, draw the groundhog’s teeth on the white foam and glue them on.

HOW DO WE DO THIS KIDS CRAFT ACTIVITY WITH CHILDREN OF DIFFERENT AGES?
CHANGES FOR CHILDREN UNDER 4 YEARS OLD
This Groundhog Day crafts activity can be developed with younger children. To lower the difficulty level of it, you don’t need to change the materials. Indeed, at this age, children have not yet developed the ability to cut out the figures, so you have to do this for them, and they will paste each piece to create the groundhog. This way, they will carry out a kid activity according to their development and skills.
CHANGES FOR CHILDREN OLDER THAN 6
This kids craft activity can be done with older children. To increase the difficulty level, you can change the materials. To make this exercise flashier and more fun, the groundhog’s body can be made with a toilet paper tube. They must then paint it and put a lid on the tube’s bottom to arrange pencils there. The other body parts can be made with foamy. This way, they will carry out an activity according to their development and skills.
