The stimulation of fine motor skills in the infant stage is of great importance since children depend on this development to have the necessary tools to perform daily life movements, gain autonomy and strengthen the pincer movement when they start writing. The main objective of motor activities is to lead children to fine and precise movements in which hand-eye coordination is directly related.

María Montessori was concerned with creating appropriate activities for each children’s stage and area of development. That’s why she designed practical life exercises, ideal for developing them in children from 3 to 6 years of age.

Practical life activities focus on favoring children’s motor development. However, fundamental skills are developed with these activities, such as autonomy, independence, confidence, self-esteem, and order.

Parents want the best for their children. They worry that if their children do not learn to read and write quickly, they will be behind in development when they begin school. Typically, these same parents find the activities of refining fine motor skills and the practical life pointless.

However, if they would take a moment to think and observe, the parents would see that children are making their own decisions, managing their learning, and thinking for themselves through these activities.

All of this can be accomplished by fostering confidence in their abilities. They must understand that it is normal to make mistakes. The important thing is to learn from each experience and to do better each time.

So as parents, you should try to motivate and encourage children to be autonomous and independent. In this way, they will be better equipped with the necessary tools for proper learning.
