There was a time a while back when preschool teachers believed that children had no knowledge about math. Hence, the objective to teach children notions about numbers, and the teaching process was focused on that. Consequently, children did not develop their mathematical skills correctly. Nowadays, it is difficult for people to carry out simple mental operations.

Over the years, it was identified and understood that children have different mathematical knowledge. These skills are developed naturally by children through interaction and exploration of the environment. At this point, adults play a significant role since we are the ones who allow and promote child-environment contact.

In their first years of life, it is difficult for children to learn abstract concepts since, at this age, they are entirely sensory. This means that they learn about everything they can see and feel, which can be perceived through the senses. That is why it is fundamental that experiential practices are included for which children can get mathematical concepts in a concrete and manipulative way.

The Montessori learning method seeks to convert math’s complex realities into tangible and straightforward elements to develop a “mathematical mind” in children, capable of analyzing, classifying, and organizing. With it, children can naturally learn abstract concepts through their experience.

Christmas Craft for Kids

Age: 4-6-year-old children

Goal: Through this numbers for kids activity, kids will learn how to match numbers with quantities.

Difficulty level: Advanced. Children must do this numbers for kids activity autonomously with an adult’s surveillance.

MATERIALS

A tray
Five medium-size, different colored cans, each marked with a number
Snowflakes (the quantity of snowflakes is according to the number and color in each can) (Previously made)
A spoon
Flour (optional)

ACTIVITY DEVELOPMENT

Preparation for the Numbers for Kids Activity: To make the snowflakes appear as if they are lying in the snow, you can spread out a paper towel or napkin on the floor of the box and sprinkle it with flour. Arrange the cans in the tray. Lay the snowflakes (previously made) in the snow (flour).

Step 1:

Put the snowflakes in each can according to the number and color.

This numbers for kids activity can be done with older children. To increase the difficulty level, children will arrange the snowflakes in each can guided by color. After doing that, children will have to write the number of snowflakes they put in each can. In this way, children will relate quantity to number.
