Over the years, society has changed. Moms no longer stay home waiting for their husbands and dedicate themselves solely to the chores and children. The number of divorces has increased, and mom, dad, and siblings do not form a family. In ancient times, a person married a second time only if they were widowed or renewed their marriage vows.
Nowadays, it is common for parents to separate and fall in love again. However, explaining to children that you have a new partner is not an easy topic to cover.
As a first step, it is essential to understand that children are often unaware of what is happening and have trouble separating from a parent. To accept a new person in their lives, children should be progressively prepared, giving them the necessary time to assimilate the information.
Not all children will react in the same way; even the older they are, the more difficult acceptance can be. If you detect that this news causes them discomfort, please let children know the love that parents feel will not change, much less this new person will replace mom or dad.
When introducing your new partner, you can design an activity where children can participate in its elaboration. Find a neutral place. Go step-by-step not to make children feel pressured or uncomfortable.
