When we talk about fine motor skills, we talk about a series of coordinated movements made with our body that involves little muscles such as hands, fingers, feet, mouth, among others.

As children grow, they develop motor abilities by themselves and in a natural way. That doesn’t mean that we should not stimulate them.

We can help children stimulate their fine motor skills by providing exercises that allow them to develop movement coordination, such as fit figures, button/unbutton, zip/unzip, sew, etc.

Montessori’s method is designed to help children develop skills based on common activities focused on enhancing their motor skills. That also allows children to get manners and behavior.

HOW DO WE DO THIS ACTIVITY?

Topic: Fine motor skills

Age: 4-6 years old children

Goal: Enhance and stimulate children’s eye-hand coordination.

Difficulty level: Average. This thanksgiving activity is designed to be done autonomously and independently by following instructions.

MATERIALS

A small cardboard box
Paint
Pushpin
Q-tips
A plastic bowl

ACTIVITY DEVELOPMENT

Step 1:

Paint the cardboard box with a blueberry color.

Step 2:

Use the hole pushpin to open some holes in the cardboard box.

Step 3:

Introduce the Q-tips to the holes. The painted box is the sauce, and the Q-tips are the blueberries.

HOW TO CARRY OUT THIS MONTESSORI HAND EYE COORDINATION ACTIVITY WITH CHILDREN OF OTHER AGES?

CHANGES FOR CHILDREN UNDER 4 YEARS OLD

You can do this thanksgiving Montessori hand eye coordination activity with younger children. Considering younger children can easily manipulate bigger things, they can use blueberries made with foamy or cardboard of different sizes. The holes made in the sauce (box) should be the same size as the blueberries made in foamy or cardboard.

CHANGES FOR CHILDREN OLDER THAN 6

This thanksgiving activity can also be done with older children. A way to increase the difficulty level is using tweezers or a clothes hanger to put the Q-tips into the holes.
